Earn the Playing in the Past and Chess Patch with STEM the Gap Academy!

In this workshop, Girl Scout Juniors will learn the basics of chess: piece names, values, movements, and how to set up and read the board. They'll also explore the history of the queen in chess, discovering that the piece did not exist originally and how queens in history, such as Queen Isabella, helped shape its role. Together they'll examine the queen's evolution, discuss what empowers them, and celebrate with a queen party while solving the oldest chess puzzle, which uses only queens.

No prior experience or chessboard is required, as all activities are virtual. At the end, girls may purchase their Junior Playing the Past Badge from the Girl Scout shop and will receive a Chess Patch with a bishop charm by mail.
