In the Juniors Play in the Past Badge and Chess Patch workshop, Girl
Scouts will learn the basics of chess, including the names of the
pieces, their values, how they move, and how to set up and read the
board. They will also explore the fascinating history of the queen in
chess. The game initially had an all-male army, but over time,
powerful queens in history, including Queen Isabella, helped shape how
the queen piece became the most important in the game. In this
workshop, participants will dive into the queen's historical
evolution, discuss what makes us powerful like the queen, and
celebrate with a queen party while solving the oldest chess puzzle,
which uses only queens.
Students will also have the
chance to design their own crown for the class or wear a tiara to
celebrate themselves and the queen! This workshop is perfect for
players of all skill levels, as it combines engaging lessons in both
chess and history.
No prior chess experience or
chessboards are needed, as activities will be conducted using a
virtual chessboard. Girls will earn a chess patch with a bishop charm
and badge. The chess patch is included.
