Earn the Making Games Badge and Chess Patch with STEM the Gap Academy.
In the Brownies Making Games Badge and Chess Patch program, girls will learn about the history of chess, including its origins, the age of the game, and the medieval history of the chess pieces, through storytelling. Participants will also learn the movements, names, and values of the pieces and how to read the chessboard.
In this engaging two-hour course, girls will use their imagination to rewrite the history of the pieces, promoting values such as equality and non-discrimination by envisioning roles where soldiers can achieve certain statuses without bias.
Parents are encouraged to download the Lichess application for future learning. STEM the Gap Academy team members will provide guidance on how to engage Girl Scouts to learn chess through this platform.
Prerequisite: No prior chess experience or chessboards are needed, as activities will be conducted using a virtual chessboard. Girls will earn a chess patch with a knight charm and badge. The chess patch is included.
This is not a drop off event.
