Girl Scout troop 1561 makes birthday bags for those in need

Girl Scout troop 1561 made a very unique and special donation recently to St. Mary's Food Bank.

With one in four children in Arizona not knowing where their next meal is coming from, celebrating a birthday is also a difficult if not impossible experience without the resources for a cake and decorations. The fifth-graders of Troop 1561 took it upon themselves to create and deliver 30 “Birthday Bags” to the food bank's Surprise location last week. Each bag contains all the items needed to decorate a birthday cake – candles, sprinkles, etc – along with packages for crepe paper, balloons, party plates, napkins and other assorted party favors. What a fantastic idea!

The girls were treated to a tour of the Surprise facility – with a lot of time spent in the Kids Cafe area, where more than 3,000 meals are prepared each day for kids around the Valley in need of a third meal. The tour made the kids feel even better about what they did and the kids they are helping.

The food bank sees so many children come to St. Mary’s each day, so happy with just the prospect of getting food. They try to do something extra whenever possible, and these bags are the perfect way to make a birthday the special occasion every child deserves. Great job troop 1561!
