First Time Campers
Preparation and practice for campers before camp:
- Live out of your camp luggage for a few days.
- Spend the night at a friend's house to practice being away from home and your family.
- Take showers instead of baths.
- Wash your hair on your own.
- Look at the Packing List and help pack for camp so you know where to find things.
- Practice carrying your water bottle with you and drinking water at meals.
- Remind your parent or guardian to look over the frequently asked questions page on our website so they are just as ready as you are!
Tips for your first days at camp:
- Bring a photo of your family, a stuffed animal, a conforting blanket, or something similar to help you feel closer to home.
- Write letters to family and friends telling them what you enjoy about camp and letting them know you miss them.
- Talk to a counselor or staff member and let them know how you are doing, they are there to listen and to help you.
You will be sharing a cabin with other girls and living in a camp community. There are many ways that you can show respect to others, can you think of some important ones for camp?
Everyone helps take care of camp by chipping in. You will participate in all-camp kapers like doing the flag ceremony, picking up litter on the ground, or cleaning up in the lodge after a meal. You will also help with unit kapers like cleaning your unit bathroom and sweeping the unit’s program ramada.
Although the camp counselors will help you along, at camp you will need to take care of yourself and your stuff. Counselors will remind you to do things, but ultimately it will be up to you to do things like brushing your teeth, changing your underwear, drinking lots and lots of water, and picking up after yourself.
Your counselors are there to help you have a great experience at camp and to help you be safe. It is important to talk to a camp counselor if something is wrong or you need something. Maybe someone in the group is being mean, maybe you feel hungry or homesick, or maybe you lost your flashlight. Counselors can help you if they know what the problem is.
Talk with an adult you trust about any fears you might have
What if I wet the bed?
No big deal. Just tell a counselor and they will take care of it without any of your cabin mates finding out. They will wash your bedding and clothes while you and your cabin mates are out doing fun camp activities.
What if no one likes me?
There will be a lot of different girls in your unit and there will be other girls who don’t know anyone either. Counselors will start the week with games to help you get to know one another. Even girls who come with a buddy are partnered with other girls during the week so that everyone can make new friends.
What if I get sick or hurt?
Your cabin mates and counselors can help you and will take you to see our Health Supervisor. She’ll be able to fix you up in no time! Drinking lots of water will help prevent the most common camp illness – dehydration.
What if I really miss my family?
That’s ok. Many girls who come to camp feel this way, homesickness is very common. Bringing a family photo or a special stuffed animal can help. You can also talk to your camp counselors, they have a lot of experience helping girls just like you overcome homesickness.
What if I’m scared of bugs?
There are bugs, spiders, and critters at camp, after all nature is their home and at camp we get to be the visitors. But they won’t hurt you if you don’t mess with them. Make sure you leave food and candy at home so that bugs and critters won’t be tempted to get into your stuff. Your cabin mates and counselors can help you if you get too scared.
What if I forget something at home?
We want to make sure you have everything you need for a successful experience at camp. Many commonly forgotten items and toiletries are available for purchase in the trading post. We also have items that we can loan to you or we can contact your parents/guardians.
