Last week, Girl Scouts from Troop 2813 in Scottsdale visited a group of women who have a long history with the Girl Scouts organization. Several of the residents of the Vi at Grayhawk retirement community were Girl Scouts during World War II, and had amazing stories to share.

One woman recalls collecting scrap metal for the war effort, while another woman remembers how, using Morse code, she was able to get freed from a faulty elevator.

Who loves basketball? Girl Scouts! Because of the generous donation made by the Phoenix Mercury, some Girl Scouts were able to enjoy a game for free! The Phoenix Mercury donated 34 tickets and 28 hot dog and soda vouchers for the game on June 23. These tickets were distributed to girls who otherwise would not have the opportunity to participate in the Phoenix Mercury game experience.

We are most appreciative of our ongoing partnership with the Phoenix Mercury and our joint partner, Valley of the Sun United Way.

We give our hearfelt thanks to the Phoenix Mercury! Because of your donation, Girl Scouts and their families from across the Phoenix area were able to enjoy a wonderful experience.

About 200 Girl Scouts from the Mountain Rose and Squash Blossom enjoyed a week of Twilight Camp at Camp Sombrero last week!
The theme this year—100 years of Girl Scouting!

Each night was dedicated to a different decade of Girl Scouting, and the girls were able to see the uniforms and other Girl Scout artifacts from that era, and learn what it might have been like to be a Girl Scout during that time period.

And of course, there was swimming, games, crafts, and Girl Scout songs!

On the last night, girls in 4th grade and older got a special treat! They were able to stay overnight and have a traditional Girl Scout Camp experience.

There was a broken electrical line issue on June 5th at Camp Maripai, causing a very small fire. Camp staff reported the incident to a local fire department. Response was quick, and the situation was quickly resolved. No camp buildings were threatened, as the situation was a considerable distance from any occupied buildings. All camp employees are safe and fire officials have determined there is no reason to postpone any camp activities.

Camp activities are not scheduled near the affected area.

An update on the Wilfires up north:

Over the recent past, wildfires have been both a man-made and natural event that we must deal with. As always, your campers safety is our number one concern. Please be assured that we are in regular communication with the National Forest and respective County Emergency Management divisions. Unfortunately, this year’s fire season has started early, but as always, we will continue to monitor all fires throughout the state. As of June 6th, the Gladiator Fire is 85% contained and still does not pose an immediate threat. The Sunflower fire is out. Unless the situations drastically change, there will be no further updates on these two fires.

You can follow the latest on all fire news at http://www.nifc.gov/fireInfo/fireInfo_main.html or http://www.azfireinfo.az.gov/

These ten Girl Scouts won a family pack of tickets to Disney on Ice after competing in the “100 Acts of Kindness” project! Girls had to keep track and submit a record of their 100 acts of kindness—and the first 10 received free tickets. The contest was in recognition of the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting in the United States

Arizona Councilwoman Thelda Williams prepared a certificate of recognition for the Girl Scouts who participated in the 100 Acts of Kindness project, and honored them just before the show began. The certificate is hanging at our council administrative offices.

On Saturday, 500+ Girl Scouts joined together at the Zoo to celebrate the conclusion of the "It's in the Bag" project-which challenged Girl Scouts to go into their communities and collect plastic bags, then properly recycle them by donating them to local grocery stores. More than 7,000 Girl Scouts participated.

The Girl Scouts had a lot to celebrate on Saturday! Through their efforts, more than 6 million plastic bags were prevented from entering our landfills!

At the celebration, Girl Scouts were able to get to know their sister scouts, hear about their efforts, eat lunch, and participate in the Earth Day activities held at the Zoo.

The highlight of the day: Pop band "Savvy" performed for the Girl Scouts! Great job, Girl Scouts! And don't stop your "green" efforts! Because of you, our world is a greener, better place!

On March 28, 2012, four women were honored at the fourth Annual 2012 Arizona Latina Trailblazers Award event at the Phoenix Art Museum. One of these women was our own CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), Anna Maria Chávez.

Chávez was selected as a woman who has dedicated her professional and personal life to the betterment of her community, and who has achieved professional excellence—blazing a trail for others to follow, which she has done well.

Anna Maria Chávez is the first person of color to become CEO of GSUSA. A native of Eloy, Arizona, her career started with an undergraduate degree from Yale followed by earning a law degree from the University of Arizona. She’s held high level positions in federal government for the Department of Transportation and Small Business Administration. She returned to Arizona in 2000 to work in state government and went on to serve on the staff of former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, where she rose to become Deputy Chief of Staff. After Governor Napolitano resigned to become Chief of Homeland Security, Chávez sought out a new opportunity as the Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas, which eventually led to her current role.

The Trailblazer award was presented by the Phoenix College Raul H. Castro Institute and Latino Perspectives Magazine.

Chávez was presented her Award by an Ambassador-level Girl Scout Miriam Salazer from Phoenix.

The other awardees included public health advocate and former state legislator Amanda Aguirre, Elizabeth Archuleta, a Coconino County Board of Supervisor, and Terri Cruz, community advocate and longtime social services provider at Chicanos Por La Causa.

Anna Maria, thank you for visiting Arizona to accept this well-deserved award! You inspire us all!

We all know how great our Girl Scout summer camps are, and now, the world does too! (or at least anyone who reads "the examiner!") Girl Scout summer camps were listed among the "best summer camps in Phoenix." Here is what they had to say:

"Now that spring has sprung and the desert begins to heat up a parent’s thoughts may turn to summer camp. Here in the Valley of the Sun there are many to choose from. Here’s a sampling of the best summer camps for kids in Phoenix.

Girl Scouts Arizona Cactus-Pine Council has many different camps for all types of girls. There are both day camps and overnight camps available in both Phoenix and Prescott. There are camps for learning ceramics, horseback riding, chemistry and more. Camps are for girls in grades 1-12 whether they are a Girl Scout or not and sessions begin June 4."

In 1916, The Golden Eaglet of Merit– the highest award a Girl Scout could achieve – was created. To receive this award, a girl had to earn a required number of proficiency badges and be judged by the National Standards Committee on her service and character. The Golden Eaglet (or Golden Eagle) remained until 1938, when the award name was changed to “First Class.”

Even though some of the details have changed over the years, the tradition of leadership awards in Girl Scouting has remained an important aspect of the Girl Scout experience. Currently, Girl Scouts can earn Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards. On Saturday, March 31st, twenty three girls received their Gold Awards and 136 were honored with their Silver Awards.

These girls are actively making a difference in the world around them—doing exactly what the Girl Scout Promise and Law challenges them to do. As we feel a sense of pride for what today’s girls are accomplishing, let’s take a look back at some of our earliest Girl Scout Award winners....

Troop 1920 – named in honor of the year in which women in the United States gained the right to vote – is an honorary troop with the special mission to continue as a strong voice for girls and women at the state level.

More than 200 attendees watched as Executive staff and Board members from our council and our sister council, the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona, spoke of the 100th anniversary of Scouting, and the important role Girl Scouts and the State legislature can play in making the future brighter for the girls in Arizona. Our own Governor, Jan Brewer, also spoke about her time as a Girl Scout, and read a proclamation honoring the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts.

After the ceremony, the Governor signed House Bill 2498 into law, which establishes March 12th each year as “Girl Scouts of the USA Day” in Arizona. Girl Scout cookies and milk from Shamrock farms was available in the senate lawn following the ceremony.

Thank you to all who attended and took part in the ceremony--particularly the Girl Scouts. You are the reason why we are celebrating! Happy 100th anniversary, Girl Scouts!

This past Saturday, 600+ Girl Scouts, families and other community members came together to celebrate the Girl Scouts 100th anniversary, and participate in the 100th Anniversary 5K Thin Mint Sprint.

Girl Scouts were decked out in Scouts attire, and came out in droves to run in the 5k Thin Mint Sprint, and walk in the 1 Mile Samoa Stroll. We even had two girls wearing a Thin Mint and Samoa costume!

After the race, Girl Scouts enjoyed the awards ceremony, a vendor fair, and, of course, pizza!

The Girl Scouts Night at the Coyotes was held Saturday, March 3! What a fun we had!

A total of 356 Girl Scouts and their families watched the Coyotes play the Columbus Blue Jackets. All girls received beautiful pink Coyotes patches, saw their troop numbers in lights on the scoreboard, and watched our own Camp Commercial at the game. We held a booth to distribute Girl Scouts materials, including summer camp guides and Women's History Month literature.

Thanks, Girl Scouts families, for coming out!

On Saturday, February 25, Girl Scouts experienced activities, food from around the world

Every year at the Girl Scouts’ World Thinking Day, Scouts celebrate that they are part of a global community, one of the nearly 150 countries with Girl Scouts and Girl Guides. Girl Scout troops host booths representing various countries, and share food, crafts, activities and the culture of the country with other Girl Scouts and community members to enjoy.

At this year’s event on Saturday, February 25 at Margaret T. Hance Park in Phoenix, there was no shortage of fun: With food, dancing, music, homemade jewelry and games from countries stretching around the globe—the girls were eager to share what they had learned.

By Leigh Farr

For two years, Girl Scouts from Troop 390 at Rover Elementary School have worked on a service project to stamp out Styrofoam lunch trays in their school district. Having presented their research and recommendations to school administrators, district officials and even the Mayor of Tempe, the girls in Troop 390 are excited to learn that the Tempe Elementary School District has selected Rover to test a new environmentally friendly lunch tray. The trays, which now are being used by Rover students, are made in the United States from 100% sustainable and renewable resources.

If the trays are a success, they could be used district-wide as early as next year!

Amazing work, girls! Your advocacy skills and determination are inspiring.

When Girl Scouts at Rover Elementary learned that their school was using non-recyclable lunch trays made of Styrofoam, they decided to launch a service project to help their school district go green. Styrofoam, they discovered, is a non-sustainable resource that is difficult to recycle and is manufactured with styrene, a chemical that has been shown to cause negative health effects.

The Girl Scouts Cookie Sale: How it all Began

In 1917 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, a troop baked and sold cookies at their local high school—the first record of girls using cookie sale proceeds toward troop activities.

In 1922 in an article from the American Girl Magazine, a cookie recipe was given, with the suggestion that girls utilize cookie sales as a means for raising money. They estimated a box of Girl Scout cookies could be sold for .25 to .35 cents. Since then, the cookie sale has become the largest girl-led business in the world, and a leadership program unlike any other.

Girl Scouts SWAPS: The tradition of friendship

By Lindsay Johnson

So, what is a SWAP? Well, it’s a Special Whatchamacallit Affectionately Pinned Somewhere.

Still wondering what a SWAP is? Keep reading…

In 1956, at the first National Senior Roundup, the tradition of SWAPS began. Girls were instructed prior to attending to make charms, trinkets or other objects that represent themselves or their home state. The idea—Girls would “swap” their homemade objects with girls they meet at the Roundup, and pin them to their Roundup hat to symbolize the many friends they met. At the end of the Roundup, each girl had a hat full of swaps from her sister scouts from across the country.

Juliette Low: A Birthday Tribute

By: Lindsay Johnson

“Looking back, it seems to me now that she was always either roaring with laughter, often self-directed, or foaming with indignation about some injustice to man or beast.” Arthur Gordan, Juliette’s nephew (1956)

In the many black and white photos, biographical sketches and timelines that document Juliette Low’s life and her founding of the Girl Scouts, the full story about this quirky, hilarious, bull-headed and thoughtful woman often goes untold. This was what prompted Low’s nephew, Arthur Gordon, to write an article for the Reader’s Digest in 1956. His hope was that her name would be remembered not only as an icon of the Girl Scouts organization, but for her spirit and joy that the organization was born of. The above quote from Arthur is a peek inside the personality of our founder—a personality that created a legacy in many ways.

In honor of Low’s upcoming 151st birthday, take a moment to learn about the woman behind the Girl Scouts organization! Click on the link below the image to learn more.

Arizona’s First Golden Eaglet

By Lindsay Johnson

Jean Maddock Clark began her Scouting journey in 1922 as one of the first Girl Scouts in the first troop in the Phoenix Area. With Alice Marshall as her troop leader, 13-year-old Jean’s natural leadership abilities were quickly recognized. Her diaries document the responsibilities she was given as a young Scout: between leading hikes with younger girls and assisting Marshall with Troop activities, she realized early on her passion and skill for leading and teaching girls.

She also realized the important role Scouting can play in a girl’s life, and stayed active as a girl member through her formative years. By 1928, Jean was a Troop leader, and had her sights set on receiving the Golden Eaglet, the highest honor a Scout could receive at the time. In 1930, the day after graduating with honors from Phoenix Junior College, Jean became the first Golden Eaglet recipient in Arizona. She then studied at Stanford University (while leading a Girl Scouts troop, of course!) and after graduating in 1932, returned to Arizona to teach elementary education and continue leading troops.

Click on the link below the image to read the full story of Jean Clark's journey as a lifelong Girl Scout.
